  • Brighton hopes good trumps bad and ugly

2/8/2009 Brighton either is half-empty or half-full, or both. The half-empty part is so obvious even the city’s public relations counsel Ken Parks brings the subject up right off the bat. Brighton home inventories “never have gotten really out of control,” says Parks, who also serves on the Brighton Economic Development Corp. board of directors. “So the slowdown happened and the foreclosures with that, but we have jobs coming in, so I just think one of the main things you look at is to stimulate homebuilding.” True, a look at Adams County and Brighton, its county seat, produces some unsavory credit- and mortgage-related statistics. Adams County has a 90-day mortgage delinquency rate of 5.11 percent, compared with Denver County, 3.79 percent; Arapahoe County, 3.4 percent; Jefferson County, 2.04 percent; Douglas County, 1.81 percent; Boulder County, 1.18 percent; and Eagle County, 0.89 percent. But on the principle that things can always get worse, even catastrophe is all relative, isn’t it?

  • Cities balance character commerce

5/21/2008 BRIGHTON, Colo. — Visitors who stroll down quaint Main Street here often say how much the city reminds them of the small towns they grew up in: Old store facades, railroad tracks through the heart of downtown, free parking everywhere. On Brighton's east side, visitors at the new Prairie Center could be in Anywhere, USA: Super Target, Kohl's, Home Depot and other big-box retailers in a gleaming shopping center on 2,000 acres of ex-farmland near a freeway ramp. They're the two faces of Brighton, a city in the path of growth spreading between Denver and Denver International Airport. For many little cities that want to grow but not lose their small-town feel, creating an environment where the old and the new can thrive is a challenge. How do they prosper and expand their economies yet preserve their historic character and charm? The former South Elementary School student recalled hanging out at the Senior Center with his grandmother. • What Do FBR & American Idol Have in Common?

5/15/2008 45% of the children served through FBR's partner agencies are kids. People around the state, the country and the world for that matter have a heart for kids in need. Proof of that fact came to FBR recently in the form of a grant totaling $24,414. FBR received this grant from Charity Projects Entertainment Fund and “IDOL GIVES BACK” to combat childhood hunger in the Metro Denver area. For those of you who don't watch "American Idol," the producers dedicated a show last year toward raising money for various charities. Folks around the world called in to make pledges and that money was divided between the charities. America's Second Harvest (A2H), our parent organization, was one of those charities. FBR applied for a portion of the funds granted to A2H and were awarded the $24,414.
