27J ballot measures endorsed
9/22/2008 - Brighton, Colorado
School District 27J received two endorsements late last week for its budget initiatives on the November ballot. The Brighton Economic Development Corp. and the Greater Brighton Chamber of Commerce support the district’s construction bond and mill-levy measures.
“The BEDC board of directors views the School District 27J, 2008 ballot measures 3A and 3B, as very important steps in moving the greater Brighton community toward a more promising economic future,” said Raymond Gonzales, president/ CEO. The endorsements were announced in news releases from the two concerns.
“The school construction bond initiative would allow the district to build much-needed new schools ... without increasing the current property tax rate,” said BEDC Chairman Troy Whitmore, United Power director of external affairs.
“Getting the bond and mill levy to pass are vital to maintaining a healthy business environment,” said Kevin Kildow, vice chairman of the chamber. “The chamber board believes the school district board and staff leadership have demonstrated fiscal responsibility, marked improvement and has carefully planned for the future.”
The construction measure would allow 27J to increase its general obligation indebtedness by $125 million, to proceed with long-range plans to accommodate the rapidly growing student population. The mill-levy override would provide $3 million in general operating revenues to maintain levels of service and
enhance educational opportunities and public safety for all students.
