Retail
Brighton retailers attract consumers of all age and incomes, but surveys show that those who are younger and have higher household incomes tend to shop here more frequently.
As the nearest and largest retail center for many surrounding communities with limited retail, Brighton has long been the dominant trade hub. Its trade area includes the communities of Ft. Lupton, Hudson, Keenesburg, Lochbuie, northern Commerce City and eastern Thornton.
While locals and residents of these communities patronize Brighton businesses, they are not yet able to find everything they need. A survey of Brighton trade area residents indicates a demand for the following retail, restaurant and entertainment opportunities:
Restaurants (casual and fine dining)
- Specialty apparel (men’s, women’s and children's)
- Musical entertainment
- Furniture and appliances
- Consumer goods
- Sporting goods
- Office supplies and equipment
- Toys
- Books

- Specialty foods
- Department and discount stores
- Gifts and miscellaneous specialty goods
- Home furnishings (housewares, bed/bath, kitchenware, linens, imports)

City Sales Tax Collection
As Brighton's retail base grows and diversifies, the city's sales tax collections grow as well. Local consumer demand for goods and services continues to be strong: sales tax collections grew more than 6% in 2006, the 17th consecutive annual increase.
Since 2000, local sales tax collections have nearly doubled, from $7.75 million to $13.1 million in 2006. National and local retailers have identified the Brighton trade area as underserved , and the local retail environment is expected to keep growing as it meets demand from the expanding trade area.
This sales tax growth allows the city to provide Brighton residents with additional parks and recreation, roads, public safety, trails and open space, transportation improvements and amenities that benefit community residents.
